ESENCIALISMO · 40 YEARS
Thought
Art, knowledge, experience.
An integral perspective
Esencialismo is not conceived merely as a way of producing images.
From its earliest formulations, it proposes a broader reflection on the relationship between art, knowledge, experience and life.
Its thought unfolds through the work, but also through manifestos, writings, lectures, conversations, research and teaching.
Artistic creation thus appears as a form of knowledge: a way of questioning what cannot always be explained through rational language alone.
Art · knowledge · experience
Three dimensions offer an approach to one of the cores of Esencialismo thought: artistic production, forms of knowledge and the experience of the person who creates.
Art
The work as a territory of inquiry.
Not merely as a formal result, but as a process through which relationships, associations, tensions and meanings emerge that were not fully determined at the outset.
Knowledge
Artistic experience can produce a particular form of knowledge.
Not necessarily demonstrative or scientific, but sensory, symbolic, embodied, intuitive and critical.
Experience
Individual experience is not excluded from artistic production.
Memory, perception, events, images and associations take part in constructing the work.
Science · art · life
Esencialismo thought makes it possible to question the boundaries between different ways of knowing.
Art, science, philosophy, everyday experience and education emerge as fields capable of establishing shared relationships and questions without losing their differences.
Reason
What can be analysed, organised and formulated.
Perception
What appears through sensory experience.
Imagination
The capacity to produce associations and new relationships.
Creation
The territory where those dimensions can meet in artistic experience.
The manifestos
The manifestos are essential sources for reconstructing the evolution of Esencialismo thought.
Their place on this page is not to function as isolated documents, but to reveal formulations, continuities, transformations and contexts.
Teaching creation
Thought becomes truly alive when it can be put to the test.
In teaching, an idea ceases to belong only to the person who formulated it. It encounters other experiences, other generations and other ways of creating.
For decades, Helena Distéfano has transformed that relationship between art, experience, knowledge and pedagogy into a sustained practice.
The Workshop is one of the spaces where that continuity can be observed.
Thinking through practice
HELENA DISTÉFANO
Esencialismo has documents, formulations, publications and a history that must be preserved with rigour.
But artistic thought does not remain alive simply because its documents are preserved.
It remains alive when it continues to be questioned.
Through her work, teaching, research and the Workshop, Helena Distéfano sustains that continuity in the present.
Her position is not solely that of safeguarding a memory.
It is also to study it, transmit it, put it into practice and confront it with new experiences.
From there, the legacy of Esencialismo ceases to be exclusively historical and once again becomes a contemporary question.
